About Laurens Cloete
Laurens Cloete is a highly experienced science, technology, and innovation (STI) professional with a specialization in green hydrogen. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in engineering from the University of Pretoria. During his tenure as Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Group Executive, he provided executive leadership to ten CSIR units, including the CSIR Energy Centre, which focuses on modeling and advisory services for a transition to a renewable energy-based energy system. He also oversaw the Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) infrastructure centre of competence.
In brief
Laurens is a senior Rebel with extensive experience in science and technology management, including technology road mapping, techno-economic modeling, and technology transfer. Additionally, he has been studying and advising on innovation and industrial policy and socio-technical transitions, applying frameworks such as the multi-level perspective and the technological systems of innovation framework. With over 23 years of prior experience working with various government, state-owned companies, private sector, and international stakeholders, he led the development of South Africa’s National Research, Development, and Innovation Roadmap for Information and Communication Technology, adopted by the Cabinet in 2013.
