Analysis of business cases

Exporting GH2 from Algerian to EU markets

This project is designed to develop the technical, institutional, and strategic capacities of relevant public and private actors in the Algerian GH2 sector to support the rapid development of large- and medium-scale GH2, including supporting the development of an Algerian GH2 industry and the establishment of Algeria as an important GH2 producer for export and local use.

The challenge

Algeria has the potential to become a major exporter of green hydrogen to Europe, given its abundant renewable energy resources, robust infrastructure, and ambitious hydrogen growth strategy. However, current plans for renewable energy capacity are insufficient to meet the demand for green hydrogen production. The challenge of this project is to develop business cases for exporting green hydrogen from Algeria to EU markets, unlocking investment in the required renewable energy infrastructure and other low-carbon hydrogen value chain components.

The approach

The approach will develop a comprehensive techno-economic model covering the full value chain for green hydrogen production, from renewable electricity generation and desalination to electrolysis, compression, and conditioning of hydrogen for transport and reconversion at the point of destination.

This project aims to develop business cases for exporting green hydrogen from Algeria to European markets, thereby providing valuable insights into the potential market demand for hydrogen in Europe in the medium and long term, as well as the potential for supply and the cost of producing hydrogen in Algeria and transporting it to Europe. The project will also help in identifying barriers and opportunities, emphasizing international financing options.

Impact

Unlocking investments in the required renewable energy infrastructure and other low carbon hydrogen value chain components.
