Strategic guidance to effectively support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Partnership
The South African government has established a comprehensive framework to guide its transition to a low-carbon economy while ensuring social and economic justice. This framework, developed by the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), outlines a shared vision for a “just transition” that prioritises the well-being of all South Africans, particularly the most vulnerable.
The challenge
In October 2023 the Netherlands joined the International Partner Group (IPG) countries in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JET-P). The JET-P is a partnership established in COP26 (2021) together with South Africa and looks to support the acceleration of decarbonising South Africa.
This effort identifies and outlines investment and business opportunities for Dutch investors and companies within the context of the JET-P in South Africa. By doing so, it aims to facilitate the alignment of Dutch interests with the objectives of the JET-P, thereby accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy in South Africa.
In approach
The core components of this assignment included extensive research and stakeholder interviews, the findings of which are synthesized and presented. Through a comprehensive analysis of the opportunities and challenges inherent in South Africa’s energy transition landscape, this project output offers actionable insights to guide the Dutch government’s strategic interventions in support of the JET-P.
The findings were shared with Dutch stakeholders during an investment dinner to foster dialogue and raise awareness for clearly identified opportunities in renewable energy, green hydrogen and transport carbonisation (New Energy Vehicles).
Impact
Identify investment opportunities for Dutch businesses and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy in South Africa.
