Humber short sea market study
Rebel supported Associated British Ports for the purpose of a DCO application by confirming the need for addition Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) freight capacity in the Humber area.
The challenge
Associated British Ports (ABP) is planning to develop a new Ro-Ro terminal in the Port of Immingham. This new terminal will be located in the eastern part of the existing port estate and will be known as the Immingham Eastern Ro-Ro Terminal – IERRT. Due to the capacity of the new terminal, it constitutes a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) for which a Development Consent Order (DCO) application has been submitted. For the purposes of the DCO application, ABP reached out to Rebel to assist it in confirming the need for additional Roll on–Roll off (Ro-Ro) freight capacity.
The approach
Rebel conducted a market study which focused two key areas: the demand for capacity from the market and the competitive position of the Humber area within the national contexts. A comprehensive analysis of the competitive environment within the UK shortsea sector was undertaken. The historic trade structure of the target markets was evaluated together with their potential outlook, focusing on the volumes transported by LoLo and RoRo vessels.
Furthermore, a detailed logistic cost model was developed in order to determine the total logistic costs between the hinterland of the terminal and its competitors to each of the short sea shipping markets of interest. The model enabled Rebel to quantify the competitive position and market share of the Humber area and confirm the need for additional capacity.
Impact
Supporting a DCO application by confirming the need for additional Ro-Ro freight capacity in the Humber area through in-depth market and competitive analysis.
