Handbook Africa Green Port Forum

Realized in Continent of Africa

Rebel advises the African Green Ports Forum on developing a guideline handbook to promote sustainable practices and decarbonization strategies across African ports.

The challenge

Ports across Africa face significant hurdles in adopting green technologies and practices, compounded by a lack of standardization and varying levels of infrastructure development. While some ports have initiated decarbonization measures, most lack clear pathways or frameworks to systematically integrate green energy solutions and align with international best practices. Additionally, bottlenecks in regulatory and business model structures pose challenges to scaling up sustainable port operations.

The approach

Rebel’s initial phase focused on a comprehensive appraisal of the current state of green initiatives in African ports. This included establishing a robust assessment framework, conducting a literature review, and developing surveys targeting a representative sample of 35 ports. By analyzing the gathered data, Rebel identified baseline conditions, infrastructure gaps, and business practices across the continent.

Furthermore, global benchmarks were leveraged to highlight opportunities for technology transfer and policy alignment, creating actionable insights for the development of tailored green port solutions.

Impact

Driving sustainable change in African ports by creating a guideline to standardize green practices and support decarbonization.
