African Urban Sanitation Investment Fund (AUSIF)

Realized in Multiple African countries

‘Business as usual’ is not delivering safe sanitation in sub-Saharan African cities. After decades of development African cities, sanitation service delivery remains limited.

Challenge

The AUSIF seeks to address these challenges by mobilizing capital for new sanitation approaches: city-wide inclusive sanitation, fecal sludge management, and the provision of innovative approaches along the sanitation value chain, including financing, technology, business, and implementation arrangements.

The approach

Rebel was asked by the African Water Facility hosted by the African Development Bankto support the development of a new investment strategy to scale sanitation development through local economies.

We developed a holistic investment approach allowing AUSIF to provide financial solutions and support during the early stages of (local) market development. The goal was to spur the development of SME business models in urban sanitation.

Impact

A new investment strategy to incentivize urban sanitation businesses in Sub-Sahara Africa.
