Pre-feasibility study for identification of future potential benefits from hydrogen application in martitime transport in Indonesia

Realized in Indonesia

Rebel was appointed by the Asian Development Bank in evaluating the feasibility of hydrogen implementation in Indonesia’s maritime transport sector.

The challenge

Pertamina (the national petroleum company of Indonesia) has indicated interest to conduct studies with ADB support for hydrogen energy deployment as part of Indonesia’s climate change mitigation and adaptation programs. Pertamina’s immediate interests lie in green hydrogen production, as well as in hydrogen applications in Indonesian cities.

Rebel conducts a pre-feasibility study that focuses on the assessment of hydrogen application to domestic ships and further into port operations, such as fuel supply facilities. Furthermore, Rebel evaluates the local technical, financial and regulatory aspects in order to identify potential investments that could be supported by ADB. The analysis covers aspects like the evaluation of the required infrastructure and storage technology, the associated CAPEX and OPEX investments, as well as risk of investment,

but further the relevant policy and financial support that is needed to develop low carbon alternative fuels market for maritime transport in Indonesia, together with the identification of potential regulatory barriers. A workshop is organized to facilitate knowledge sharing with the findings of the project with local stakeholders in Indonesia.

Impact

We assess the feasibility of hydrogen use in Indonesia’s maritime sector to identify viable investments and support low-carbon fuel adoption.
